1949:The Club was established as a Special
Interest Club by permission of the Base Commander
as part of the Personnel Support Program at CFB
Halifax. Originally part of the Royal
Canadian Navy Sailing Association (RCNSA), it was housed in an old seaplane
hanger near the present Club's location.
1957: The Club co-located with
the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron at the Seaward Defence, now the site
of the Halifax Container Pier.
1967: RCNSA relocated
to the current site, part of CFB Shearwater, to make way for the construction of
the container piers that year.
Various changes over the years put us in our present facility - a two story club house, several
utility and storage buildings, a marina and
mooring field. Our growth has
been largely based on contributions of
club members for labor, knowledge and funding, making the principle of "self-help" a
cornerstone of our successful operation.
This "self-help" principle has
fostered a community spirit and has kept the club
operational costs low.
The Club was later named Canadian
Forces Sailing Association (CFSA) Halifax Squadron
and further integrated into the Canadian Military.
The Club continues to operate under the auspices
of CFB Halifax.
1982: The club was directed to enter
the CFB Shearwater Non Public Fund (NPF)
organization.
1986: Chapter
2/86 of the Canadian Forces Administrative
Orders (CFAO) 50-5, which had limited CFSA to Service
personnel, was amended to include civilian members.
The SYC constitution was presented and approved at a Special General
Meeting in May, and all members of CFSA Halifax Squadron were granted
membership in the CFB Shearwater Yacht Club.
1986: The Club retained its
broader based membership and formed the Shearwater
Yacht Club as a recreational club of CFB Shearwater
under the provisions of CFAO 50-20 at the Spring General Meeting in April.
1990: SYC and CFSA formed a single Club at the SGM under one Commodore but
2 sets of
flag officers to represent their different interests.
2005: Relocated club entrance
to Avenger Place, located off Pleasant St.
(turn at corner a small red brick building called "The Baden Powell
Center").
