Introduction

Introduction to Sailing

Age Group:           6-9

Focus:                 Introduction to sailing in a structured, but fun, way.

Prerequisites:        None

Content:              CYA White Sail 1

Equipment:           Angelfish Pram

Duration:              One week

Cost:                   $ 125 + tax

Schedule:

1.        05 – 09 Jul                              5.     02-- 06 Aug

2.        12 – 16 Jul                              6.     09-- 13 Aug

3.        19 – 23 Jul                              7.     16-- 20 Aug

Youth Learn to Sail

Age Group:           9-14

Focus:                 Competent White Sail dingy sailor in winds up to 9 knots.

Prerequisites:        None

Content:              CYA White Sail 1, 2, and 3

Equipment:           Angelfish Pram, Club 420

Duration:              Two weeks

Cost:                   $ 250 + tax

Schedule:

1.        05 – 16 Jul

2.        19 – 30 Jul 

3.        02 – 13 Aug 

4.        16 – 27 Aug  

 

Youth Learn to Sail (Advanced)

Age Group:         12-15

Focus:               Competent dinghy sailor, including spinnaker, in winds up to 14 knots.

Prerequisites:      CYA White Sail 3

Content:            CYA Bronze 4 & 5

Equipment:         Club 420

Duration:            Two weeks

Cost:                 $ 250 + tax

Schedule:

1.        02 – 13 Aug

2.        16  --27 Aug

 

 

Adult Learn to Sail (Basic)

Age Group:          16+

Focus:                Competent white sail dinghy sailor in winds up to 9 knots.

Prerequisites:       None

Content:             CYA White Sail 1, 2 and 3

Equipment:          Club 420

Duration:             Four evenings (1700 – 2100) and two full Saturdays (0900 -1600)

Cost:                  $ 175 + tax

Adult Learn to Sail (Advanced)

Age Group:       16+

Focus:             Competent dinghy sailor, including spinnaker, in winds up to 14 knots.

Prerequisites:        CYA White Sail 3

Content: CYA Bronze 4 & 5

Equipment:            Club 420

Duration:               Four evenings (1700 – 2100) and two full Saturdays (0900 -1600)

Cost:                       $ 175+ tax

Learn to Cruise (Basic)

Age Group:           14+

Focus:                    Competent keelboat day skipper in familiar waters and moderate conditions.

Prerequisites:        None

Content: CYA Basic Cruising

Equipment:            Tanzer 7.5

Duration:               Four full days (0900 – 1600)

Cost:                       $ 400 + tax

Schedule:             

1.        21-24 Jun

2.       19-22 Jul

3.       23-26 Aug

 

 

-          Daily Course Times:            0900 – 1600 (unless noted otherwise). Drop off for children 0830 – Pick up by 1630.

-          Early registration is encouraged as course loading is limited in order to provide optimum instructor/student ratios.

      -          HST will be added to course cost. Special tax receipts for recreational programs will be provided.

      -          A 10% discount will be given to all Shearwater Yacht Club members and family members of active Military.

       -        All fees must be paid in full at registration. Refunds will be offered at the following rates, if an early withdrawal from a course become necessary:

o        One Week Youth course – 50% of the fee, up to the second day of the course

o        Three Week Youth course – 50% of the fee, up to the end of the first week of the course

o        Four Week Youth course – 50% of the fee, up to the end of the second week

o        Adult Learn-to-Sail – 50% of the fee, up to the third day of instruction

o        Adult Learn-to-Cruise – 50% of the fee, up to the second day of instruction

      -          Course participant should bring the following items to class:

-          D.O.T. approved Personal Floatation Device  ( PFD )

-          Sunscreen, Hat, and Sunglasses

-          Lunches and snacks for morning and afternoon                           

-          Change of clothes and extra socks

-          Proper rubber soled foot wear NOT FLIP FLOPS   something that will stay on in the water

-          Rain gear

-          Swimsuit and Towel

-          Shorty Wetsuit recommended if you have one

Canadian Power and Sail Squadron (CPS)

The Halifax and Dartmouth area's are serviced by Alderney Squadron and the Halifax Squadron of the CPS.  They are units of Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, an organization similar to United States Power Squadrons. Both are non-profit organizations consisting of members who volunteer their time to promote marine safety and education throughout the private boating community.
